Presidenta de la Asociación de Humanidades Hispánicas/Hispanic Association for the Humanities desde junio de 2016. Sus años de servicio en la AHH incluye su papel como vocal de la junta directiva de la AHH desde 2008 y como miembro de la comisión organizadora de los congresos de 2009 (Sevilla), 2012 (Madrid) y 2014 (Universidad de Santiago de Compostela). Ha servido a la AHH como co-directora del congreso de la AAH en la Universidad Carlos III (Madrid) en 2016 y como co-directora/organizadora del Congreso de la AHH en la Universidad de Extremadura (Cáceres) en 2018 y en la Universidad de Málaga en 2022.

Carmen Sotomayor Blázquez ha sido profesora titular de Español en el Departamento de Lenguas, Literaturas y Culturas de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Greensboro. Desde enero de 2023 es profesora emérita de dicha universidad.

Obtuvo su doctorado en 1987 de la Universidad Estatal de Michigan (MSU). Su trabajo de investigación se centra en la producción cultural, literaria y fílmica de los siglos XX y XXI. Ha estudiado aspectos orientalistas en la producción de Juan Goytisolo, así como la relación entre espacio e identidad en la narrativa de Josefina Aldecoa y Rosa Montero. Otras áreas de interés de la doctora Sotomayor incluyen la representación de la identidad (política y de género) en los romances y carteles de la Guerra Civil española y en el cine español de los años sesenta. También ha centrado su investigación en  aspectos de poder y género en representaciones cinemáticas de la Transición española y en la dimensión política y social del género negro (narrativa y cine) en España.

President of the Asociación de Humanidades Hispánicas/Hispanic Association for the Humanities since June 2016. Previously, she served the AHH as a member of the board of directors since 2008 and as a member of the organizing committee of the 2009 (Seville), 2012 (Madrid) and 2014 (University of Santiago de Compostela) congresses. She has also served the AHH as co-director of the AAH congress at the Carlos III University (Madrid) 2016 and as co-director/organizer of the 2018 AHH Congress at the University of Extremadura (Cáceres) and the 2022 AHH Congress at the University of Malaga.

Carmen Sotomayor Blázquez has been a full professor of Spanish in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Since January 2023 she has been an emeritus professor at said university.

She earned her PhD in 1987 from Michigan State University (MSU). Her research work focuses on the cultural, literary and film production of the 20th and 21st centuries. She has studied orientalist aspects in the production of Juan Goytisolo, as well as the relationship between space and identity in the narratives of Josefina Aldecoa and Rosa Montero. Dr. Sotomayor’s other areas of interest include the representation of identity (political and gender related) in the romances and posters of the Spanish Civil War and in the Spanish cinema of the 1960s. She has also focused her research on aspects of power and gender in cinematic representations of the Spanish Transition and on the political and social dimension of the noir genre (narrative and film) in Spain.

Kyra A. Kietrys es Catedrática de Estudios Hispánicos en Davidson College, Carolina del Norte, donde empezó en 2001 después de doctorarse en la Universidad de Pensilvania con la especialización en literatura contemporánea española. Es directora del Departamento de Estudios Hispánicos (2011-2015 y 2022-2026) y profesora afiliada de los programas de Educación, Humanidades, Teoría Literaria Global, y Estudios de Género y Sexualidad.

Sus líneas de investigación incluyen el estudio de la mujer, la memoria y la traducción. Algunas publicaciones recientes incluyen: “La re-presentación de Hildegart en los años 70: Sexo y el paratexto” (2022),  “Antonio Altarriba’s El ala rota: remembering a woman hidden in ‘the back room of history’” (Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, 2021), la edición crítica de Género y sexualidad en tres novelas proletarias de la Segunda República Española (Stockcero, 2020), y “The Translation of Memory Through Television: El tiempo entre costuras and the Spanish Civil War” (2019).

Fuera del aula, ha liderado la creación de programas de estudio en el extranjero (en Cádiz y Madrid), el programa colaborativo entre Davidson College y la escuela pública local para la enseñanza de español (Davidson SK8S) y el programa de verano de prácticas docentes en España. En la profesión, es antigua tesorera de la Asociación de Estudios de Género y Sexualidades (AEGS/AILFCH), antigua Editora de Reseñas para Letras Peninsulares, y actual vicepresidenta de la Asociación de Humanidades Hispánicas (AHH) desde junio 2016.

BIOGRAPHY

After completing her Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001, Kietrys began her career at Davidson College in Davidson, NC where she served as department chair from 2011-2015 and again from 2022-2026. She is a member of the Department of Hispanic Studies and serves as affiliate faculty in the programs of Education Studies, the Humanities, Global Literary Theory, and Gender & Sexuality Studies.

Kietrys’s research interests include the study of women, memory and translation. Kietrys is committed to creating opportunities for intercultural exchange on campus, in the community, and abroad. In 2002, she established the Davidson Summer Program in Cádiz, Spain and regularly serves as resident director. She also helped create the Davidson in Madrid semester program as well as the summer teaching internship in Spain program. In her local community, she directs the Spanish in Davidson Elementary School partnership. In this program, college volunteers teach weekly Spanish lessons to elementary school classes.

In the profession, she has served on the AP Spanish Language Test Development Committee with the College Board and Educational Testing Service. She also served as treasurer of the Association for Gender and Sexuality Studies (AEGS/AILFCH) and book review editor for Letras Peninsulares. Since June 2016, she has been serving as Vice-President of the Association of Hispanic Humanities (AHH.)

Adam Lee Winkel es profesor titular de español en la Universidad de High Point. Obtuvo su título universitario en la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill y completó sus estudios de posgrado en la Universidad de Columbia. Ha publicado artículos sobre la novela, el teatro y el cine español en Hispanic Studies Review, Bulletin of Spanish Studies, Symposium: A Quarterly Journal in Modern Literatures y Studies in Spanish & Latin American Cinemas, sobre el fútbol español en The International Journal of the History of Sport, y sobre el fútbol y la narrativa en TEXT y en la colección  Intersections of Sport and Society in Creative Writing (2023). Adam Lee Winkel is Associate Professor of Spanish at High Point University. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his graduate studies at Columbia University. He has published articles on Spanish novel, theater, and film in Hispanic Studies Review, Bulletin of Spanish Studies, Symposium: A Quarterly Journal in Modern Literatures, and Studies in Spanish & Latin American Cinemas, on Spanish football (soccer) in The International Journal of the History of Sport, and on football and narrative in TEXT and in the edited volume Intersections of Sport and Society in Creative Writing (2023). His teaching and research interests include: post-civil war Spanish literature and cultural studies, sport and culture, and urban theory and cultural practices.

Licenciatura Universidad de Cádiz, MA Villanova University, PhD University of Pennsylvania. A specialist in early modern Hispanic culture, his research interests within the early modern period focus on Habsburg imperial policy and propaganda, their effects on issues of gender, ethnicity and nation building, and their expression through performance. He has published articles in academic journals such as Viator: Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Journal of Early Modern Cultural Studies, Nueva revista de filología hispánica, Hispanófila, and Analecta Malacitana among others. He is also the author of the monograph Performing the King Divine: The Early Modern Spanish Aulic Festival (Edition Reichenberger 2017).

Licenciado por la Universidad de Cádiz, Máster por la Universidad de Villanova, Pennsylvania, y  Doctorado por la Universidad de Pennsylvania. Especialista en cultura hispánica de la temprana edad moderna, su investigación se centra en las políticas y propaganda imperiales de los Habsburgo; sus efectos en cuestiones de género, etnicidad y construcción de la nación; y su expresión por medio de performance. Ha publicado artículos en las revistas académicas Viator: Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Journal of Early Modern Cultural Studies, Nueva revista de filología hispánica, Hispanófila, y Analecta Malacitana entre otras.
